The Mission of Dr. Susan Loves Research Foundation is:
"To end breast cancer in ten years."
What a great mission- and how can I be a part of this? How can you be a part of this?
The first page of Dr. Love's website goes on to say:
"Over the last 10 years, 2,000 organizations have raised $1.7 billion to fight breast cancer. With all this effort, it is surprising that we have not made more progress in our understanding of this disease. And while 110 women are dying of breast cancer every day, we have yet to find the cause of this disease or how to prevent it. We are still approaching treatment for breast cancer in the same ways: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
Women deserve better.
Clearly, the time is now for a revolutionary approach to prevention research. To defeat breast cancer, we need new approaches and new technologies. Our research can't just continue to focus on the same
things: trying to find new ways to image the breast, finding better chemotherapy combinations, or targeting cancer cells that have already spread. We need revolutionary new approaches that stop people from ever getting cancer in the first place.
This is possible. And it is why we are so excited. We now have a way to get to where breast cancer starts, truly the first step to eradicating this disease."
My name is Courtney Zinszer and I was a 2-Time Breast Cancer Survivor by the age of 35. When I was first diagnosed in 1996, my girlfriend and a fellow young survivor, Susan, took me to hear Dr. Love speak at UCLA. I had the pleasure to hear Dr. Love speak again and to meet and talk with her in Florida at the FORCE conference last February, and 2 months later, in April at the Pacific Palisades Relay For Life.
This October I will be celebrating 10 years as a cancer survivor. I am the mother to 3 young daughters and an infant son. I have 2 sisters and a mother. I have a brother, a father, and a step-father. I have female cousins and lots of girlfriends. I have male cousins and lots of guy friends. All of these are reasons to fight for a cure for breast cancer.
I want to do something BIG to celebrate my 10-year survivorship! I am one of the lucky ones who survived this terrible disease and I have to do something to give back...to give thanks for the blessing of life!
It is hard for me to believe that just 10 years ago I was bald. My waist length hair is now back, and a perfect length for donating to Locks of Love. My daughter Sedona donated 16" of her hair to Locks of Love just a couple of years ago at the age of 10 and raised over $2,000 in pledges for our Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society. What a powerful event that was for her...at such a young age...raising over $2,000. It is my turn now- to donate my hair and raise money for a cure for cancer. But you can get involved too. Young or old, male or female.
There are 3 ways to get involved:
- Cut off 10" of your hair and donate it to Locks of Love. Get pledges per inch cut to donate to Dr. Susan Love.
- Donate a portion of your sales and/or services for a day in October (or the entire month) to breast cancer research. This is especially great for Hair Salons, Nail Salons and Spas, but can be done by anyone, or any business.
- Make a donation. It's that simple.
Donations can be made by credit card on the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation website. To donate; click on "Join Us" then input donation information. 1/2 way down the donation sheet is a box marked "Comments". Please enter "Cut For Love" Pink Wings event in this area.
OR- donations can be made by check written out to Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and sent to:
Pink Wings
Attn.: Courtney Zinszer
1934 W. Thornton Lake Dr. NW
Albany, OR 97321
Please write: "Cut For Love" in the memo portion of your check.
Hair donations can also be sent to the address above, but please remember, they should be at least 10" of hair cut. Hair donations can also be sent directly to Locks of Love, please put Cut For Love on a note when sending it in directly.
My goal for this event is to raise over $25,000 for breast cancer research and get at least 100 hair donations for Locks of Love.
Hair Salons, Nail Salons and Spas can get involved too. Pick one day in October where a percentage of your sales (10%, 20% etc.) will go to this event. This can be a portion of product and/or services sold.
All participants cutting at least 10" to donate to Locks of Love and sending in donation checks totaling at least $100 will receive a free "Cut For Love" pin. Getting $100 in donations should be easy...just ask 10 people to sponsor you a $1 per inch of hair cut. OR- think big!! Ask 10 people to sponsor you $10 per inch of hair cut...and bring in $1,000 in donations.
