Pink Wings January Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

The New Year is here and I am hoping this will be a healthy and happy year for my wonderful Pink Wings customers.

Please make a New Year’s resolution to schedule your mammograms and other screenings, as early detection is the best prevention. I had my first colonoscopy in December (2 years earlier than recommended) as my grandmother died of colon cancer and my mom is currently just finishing up her chemo treatments for colon cancer. I am glad I did this early, as I had to have 1 polyp removed. I now have to go in every 5 years instead of every 10- but that is a lot better than waiting and getting a diagnosis of cancer.

December was slow for Pink Wings, but I did have fun doing a radio show with my sister in Salem, Oregon about being a young survivor. My sister talked about being a Previvor, having had both her breasts removed without having a cancer diagnosis due to her BRCA2 status and my diagnosis.  We were also able to talk about the wonderful organization FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered- www.facingourrisk.org )

Edna Photos:Edna and her little friend.jpgOn a sad note- I lost my wonderful friend, Edna, to breast cancer in December.  She had just turned 40 on November 6th.  I met her at the Young Breast Cancer Survivor Conference about 10 years ago when she was first diagnosed. After 8 years cancer free, Edna was diagnosed again in September of 2010.  She fought long and hard. Edna was a black belt in Karate & the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon pin was designed from a photo of her. I donated the proceeds of the sales of the pin to help with Edna’s expenses and over $1,000 was raised in just 36 hours. I was touched to find out that an image of the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon Pin will be etched on Edna’s tombstone. Here is a photo of Edna with a little friend.

Upcoming Events:

I am very excited about upcoming events.  My first booth will be in New Orleans at the Conference for Young Woman with Breast Cancer. I am flying out a bit early as I have never been to New Orleans before and I can’t wait to explore the city.  I will be meeting my girlfriend Lexi, from Australia, who is also a young survivor.  The conference will be from February 24-26, 2012.  Here is a link to the conference website for more information: http://www.c4yw.org/

The following weekend I will be in Las Vegas for the Power Symposium and the weekend after that, I will travel to Orlando, Florida for the Essentially Women Trade Show. I love getting the chance to fly around and meet my customers.  It is also nice to get out of the rain here in Oregon.

I have signed up to walk in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in August of 2012. It will be my 13th walk.  There is a possibility that I may go on a Safari to Africa this summer- if I do that- I may need to pass on doing a 3-Day Walk this year.  Going to Africa has been on my “List of things to do before I die” since my first diagnosis with breast cancer in 1996. I think it is about time that I make this dream a reality! If any of my fantastic customers have info on a great Safari, or decent pricing for a Safari- please contact me at Courtney@pinkwings.com

On a closing note:

I love that they have Make A Wish Foundation for children with terminal illnesses, however, I feel that it is important to make wishes come true every year for your children and yourself.  It is a fact- we will all die someday, and many of us will pass away suddenly. Life is precious and we should make the most of our time here on Earth.  I ask my children- “What is a wish that you have?” and then I try to make it happen. 2 years ago, my girls wanted to be in a parade and my son wanted to ride on a Ferris Wheel.  Within the month of them telling me this, I got an email from AYSO saying they were looking for kids from the soccer teams to ride on the AYSO float in an upcoming parade…and after the parade- there was a festival with a Ferris Wheel. I made their wishes come true on the same day. The next wish the girls had was to go to Maui. We have been over twice now. My oldest daughter wished to go to the University of San Diego. She is starting her 2nd semester there this week. This wish will cost me a lot over the next 4 years J  One of my 9 year olds told me that her next wish is to eat a crepe at the top of the Eiffle Tower in Paris.  We just took her passport photos and I will try to make this happen in the next year or two. My wishes over the years have included buying a house, adopting children, quitting my teaching job, building a big Pink Wings Team for a 3-Day walk and going to Africa. It takes time (and money) to make these wishes come true- but it feels great! Take the time to have a conversation with your kids, your spouse, your parents, yourself…and make a wish come true in 2012!

Happy New Year,

Courtney

Walking 60 Miles again!

posted by:

HI,

I am sure many of you are pinked out by now- the color seems to be everywhere. I am hoping that the funds being raised this October and through the year are going to bring this dreadful disease to an end sooner rather than later. I lost 2 young friends to breast cancer this year and another young friend is currently fighting for her life. My 3-Day Walker Coach from one of my first walks back in the year 2000 is also fighting the disease. She is just 38, single and has no kids. She lost both of her breasts to breast cancer in April and is on chemo right now. She lost her mom to breast cancer 8 years ago. Enough is enough! I am angry about what this disease is doing to my friends- what this disease does to families.

As I have said in the past- I will walk every year until we find a cure. Little did I know that I would still be walking 12 years later- with no cure in site. In 2009, the Pink Wings team raised nearly $48,000 for the Boston 3 Day. In 2010, the Pink Wings team was the #1 team in the country for the Chicago walk, raising nearly $90,000!!! This year I am walking with a much smaller Pink Wings team in Dallas the first weekend of November. I have raised over $700 so far. I have $1,600 to go to reach the required minimum of $2,300.

With your help, I can meet this goal.

Just 2 weeks ago I celebrated 15 years as a cancer survivor. I am one of the lucky ones. I was here to help my daughter get off to college and to send my son to kindergarten. I am here to see my girls dance in their dance recitals and to watch my son play in his football games. Others are not so lucky and this is why I continue to walk. Every time I meet a young girl or boy who has lost their mom to breast cancer, I wonder why. Why did their mom die and I lived? Why are my children so lucky to have their mom here with them still, when others have had to watch their moms pass away? I will never know the answer- but I can feel good about keeping up the fight and continuing to walk and raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.

I know that times are very tough right now and that people are losing their jobs and their homes. I also know that cancer does not care about this and that many more women have just been diagnosed with breast cancer during the time I am writing this letter.

Please donate whatever you can to my Dallas 60 mile walk. Those that can’t donate- please send good thoughts my way as I begin my walk November 4-6. The “no blister” thoughts and “no rain” thoughts are the best ;)

Here is a link to donate directly to my walk. I find it the fastest and easiet way to make a donation and I get an email to let me know that I am closer to my goal.

Pink Wings June 2006 News & Updates

posted by:

Hi,

These last 6 months have flown by!  Pink Wings had an exhibit booth at the FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered) conference in February in Florida, as well as the Young Survivor Conference in Denver. It was so great to meet so many new people at the first FORCE conference. This was a fantastic weekend to get informed about BRCA 1 and BRCA 2.  I am BRCA 2, and so is my younger sister. I was able to meet and talk to Dr. Susan Love at the dinner event.  I will definitely want to attend this conference again next year. Sue Friedman did a fantastic job putting on this event. To read more about FORCE- please visit their website (go to my LINKS page).

At the Young Survivor Conference, I was able to see so many other young survivors that I have met over the years. This was the first year that the conference was held in Denver. The last 2 conferences that I attended were in Philly.  It was just announced that next year’s conference will be held in Virginia. I was very sick at this conference and could barely talk, but thanks to my good friend Colleen and her sister Bethany- we were able to keep the Pink Wings booth manned. We had many new pins to show at this conference, as well as our new “What Is In Your Heart?”  necklaces (we sold out!).  I think my new friend, Elaine, bought one of everything in our booth!

In March, Pink Wings held a successful fundraising boutique for the Ezralow Foundation as they raised funds for the L.A. Revlon Run/ Walk for Women.  Pink Wings also helped to design a custom pin for the Ezralow team (as seen on the Custom Pins page of the Pink Wings store) and completed an order of almost 100 baseball caps with teal paisley ribbons.  The teal ribbon represents Ovarian Cancer.

In April, we had another busy month. Courtney flew to North Charleston, South Carolina to meet her sister, Melanie (from Gardenpaper.com) to set up a booth at the E.W. conference (Essentially Women).  This is a fantastic event for Pink Wings and Garden Paper. It is how we get our product out to the retail market.

In April, Courtney also got some sad news…the baby boy she was to adopt was born and the birth mom had changed her mind and decided to keep him.  Thank goodness for strong family and friends who reached out during this tough time with words and notes of hope.

Later in April, Courtney and her family participated in their 3rd Annual Pacific Palisades Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.  This is a fantastic event for the entire family as teams spend 24 hours walking the track raising money and awareness for cancer.  You can read the articles published about this event on the Press link on Pinkwings.com  For the 3rd year, Courtney was a team captain, as well as the Survivor Co-Chair for the event. This year, Pink Wings was proud to become a sponsor of the event.  How cool it was to see the Pink Wings Angel Logo on the back of all of the event t-shirts as a sponsor.  I am hoping Pink Wings will continue to grow so that we can sponsor more events.

In May, Courtney kept busy filling orders for custom pins and visors for teams participating in various walks for Cancer. Courtney also finally had a screening of her documentary “Courtney’s Amazing Race” at the Pacific Palisades Film Festival.  This documentary was made a few years ago as Courtney was getting ready to complete another Breast Cancer 3-Day event. The film follows Courtney and her family through a few weeks and deals with the effects that cancer has on an individual and a family.

In May- Courtney got some wonderful news!!!!!  On May 9th, she and her family were chosen to adopt a beautiful baby who had just been born earlier that day.  We named him Slayton Haven Zinszer. He was 8 lbs. 12 oz at time of birth and 20″ long.  He is the most perfect baby and a fantastic addition to the Zinszer family.  His big sisters; Sedona (12) , Sage (4) and Sienna (4) couldn’t be happier. Mommy and Daddy are beaming!! What a great gift for Mother’s Day!!

In the last  couple of months, Pink Wings has come out with more new pins.  You can view them on the website.  Our newest pin, set to arrive in just a few days, was inspired by a little girl named Madeline Ybarra. Maddie is 10-years-old.  2 years ago, she lost her mother to breast cancer. Maddie was a team captain this year for the Revlon Run/Walk and has raised almost $2,000 individually and almost $3,000 as a team of 41 members. Pink Wings is donating pins for Maddie’s team, as well as donating 100% of the proceeds from the first 27 pins sold so that Maddie can reach her goal of $2,000 for the Revlon event.  To purchase the pin- please go to www.pinkwings.com and go to our store.

Courtney will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in July in San Francisco.  She will also be walking in the Michigan Breast Cancer 3-Day event in August. If you would like to sponsor her in either of these events- please go to the Donate Link on the Pink Wings website.

More to come….Have a great summer!
