Pink Wings January Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

The New Year is here and I am hoping this will be a healthy and happy year for my wonderful Pink Wings customers.

Please make a New Year’s resolution to schedule your mammograms and other screenings, as early detection is the best prevention. I had my first colonoscopy in December (2 years earlier than recommended) as my grandmother died of colon cancer and my mom is currently just finishing up her chemo treatments for colon cancer. I am glad I did this early, as I had to have 1 polyp removed. I now have to go in every 5 years instead of every 10- but that is a lot better than waiting and getting a diagnosis of cancer.

December was slow for Pink Wings, but I did have fun doing a radio show with my sister in Salem, Oregon about being a young survivor. My sister talked about being a Previvor, having had both her breasts removed without having a cancer diagnosis due to her BRCA2 status and my diagnosis.  We were also able to talk about the wonderful organization FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered- www.facingourrisk.org )

Edna Photos:Edna and her little friend.jpgOn a sad note- I lost my wonderful friend, Edna, to breast cancer in December.  She had just turned 40 on November 6th.  I met her at the Young Breast Cancer Survivor Conference about 10 years ago when she was first diagnosed. After 8 years cancer free, Edna was diagnosed again in September of 2010.  She fought long and hard. Edna was a black belt in Karate & the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon pin was designed from a photo of her. I donated the proceeds of the sales of the pin to help with Edna’s expenses and over $1,000 was raised in just 36 hours. I was touched to find out that an image of the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon Pin will be etched on Edna’s tombstone. Here is a photo of Edna with a little friend.

Buy a pin, key chain, bracelet, tote bag, pair of socks, cell phone bling, pink ribbon scarf, gloves or hat and glove set and get your second one for free. Second item will be exactly the same as the first item ordered. For example: you pay for a Bling Pink Ribbon Pin- you will get another Bling Pink Ribbon Pin for free,  (unless you write in the order comments at check out that there is a different item you want -for example: you would rather get a motorcycle pink ribbon pin for your free one).  If you pay for 4 pins, you will receive 8 (getting 4 free.) Please do not pay for the extra 4 pins. If you have any questions about this special- please feel free to call or email me first, before placing your order.

Email is info@pinkwings.com and phone is 310-663-0482.  Make sure to type in BOGO in the shipping comments at check out or you will not receive your free items.

I am also offering 20% off your RETAIL order until January 30th. Please write in JAN20 for your Coupon Code at check out.  As we are giving you 20% off, we will NOT send 20% to your walk or event as a donation. If you would rather have the 20% go to your event instead of as a discount to your order- please mention that in the shipping comments.

Please note- you can get both the BOGO and 20% off on your orders, as long as you type in JAN20 in the Coupon Code and type BOGO in the shipping comments at check out. Upcoming Events:

I am very excited about upcoming events.  My first booth will be in New Orleans at the Conference for Young Woman with Breast Cancer. I am flying out a bit early as I have never been to New Orleans before and I can’t wait to explore the city.  I will be meeting my girlfriend Lexi, from Australia, who is also a young survivor.  The conference will be from February 24-26, 2012.  Here is a link to the conference website for more information: http://www.c4yw.org/

The following weekend I will be in Las Vegas for the Power Symposium and the weekend after that, I will travel to Orlando, Florida for the Essentially Women Trade Show. I love getting the chance to fly around and meet my customers.  It is also nice to get out of the rain here in Oregon.

I have signed up to walk in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in August of 2012. It will be my 13th walk.  There is a possibility that I may go on a Safari to Africa this summer- if I do that- I may need to pass on doing a 3-Day Walk this year.  Going to Africa has been on my “List of things to do before I die” since my first diagnosis with breast cancer in 1996. I think it is about time that I make this dream a reality! If any of my fantastic customers have info on a great Safari, or decent pricing for a Safari- please contact me at Courtney@pinkwings.com

On a closing note:

I love that they have Make A Wish Foundation for children with terminal illnesses, however, I feel that it is important to make wishes come true every year for your children and yourself.  It is a fact- we will all die someday, and many of us will pass away suddenly. Life is precious and we should make the most of our time here on Earth.  I ask my children- “What is a wish that you have?” and then I try to make it happen. 2 years ago, my girls wanted to be in a parade and my son wanted to ride on a Ferris Wheel.  Within the month of them telling me this, I got an email from AYSO saying they were looking for kids from the soccer teams to ride on the AYSO float in an upcoming parade…and after the parade- there was a festival with a Ferris Wheel. I made their wishes come true on the same day. The next wish the girls had was to go to Maui. We have been over twice now. My oldest daughter wished to go to the University of San Diego. She is starting her 2nd semester there this week. This wish will cost me a lot over the next 4 years J  One of my 9 year olds told me that her next wish is to eat a crepe at the top of the Eiffle Tower in Paris.  We just took her passport photos and I will try to make this happen in the next year or two. My wishes over the years have included buying a house, adopting children, quitting my teaching job, building a big Pink Wings Team for a 3-Day walk and going to Africa. It takes time (and money) to make these wishes come true- but it feels great! Take the time to have a conversation with your kids, your spouse, your parents, yourself…and make a wish come true in 2012!

Happy New Year,

Courtney

Pink Wings November Newsletter

posted by:

Happy November!

I hope you all had a fantastic October and a fun Halloween. I am happy to report that October was another record breaking month for Pink Wings for 2009 and we also broke the record for the most orders going out in a month in the entire history of Pink Wings!

During this busy month I had a Pink Wings booth at the Albany Walk for the Cause, the Salem Discover Pink Walk and the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Conference. The Pennsylvania conference was in Harrisburg just days before the Philly Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. I had friends participating as walkers in the event as well as on Lunch crew and decided I would make the trip to Philly for the weekend to visit. This turned out to be a very bad idea.

The Philly 3-Day turned into a Philly 1-Day because of heavy rains (they called it Noreasters). The walkers were amazing and many decided to put in 20 miles of walking a day inside the malls outside of Philly. On Saturday, nearly 800 walkers showed up at the King Of Prussia Mall. These walkers were supported by cheering crowds made up of family, supporters and mall goers. The 3-Day supplied lunch and the lunch crew showed up at the mall decked out in their 3-Day costumes handing out bag lunches and bottles of water to the walkers.

On Day 3, the walkers were finally able to put in their mileage outside. It was raining for much of the morning, but the walkers were in great spirits, as they had been all weekend. I helped my friends set up the lunch inside South Philly High School. The cafeteria looked amazing by the time they were finished. Music was blaring and the lunch crew was cheering as walkers began to come in. I was wearing a pair of UGG like boots that were very slick on the bottom. A couple of times over the weekend, I had almost slipped and fallen, but someone was always there to catch me. And then it happened….I took a step with my right foot and began to take a step with my left foot when I slipped on the wet floor and slammed down on my left knee. I heard a crack, but thought it was the sound of my knee hitting the floor. People rushed to help me, but embarrassed, I got up and walked on, telling them that I was ok. I sat down at a table, knowing that I wasn’t ok. I was in a lot of pain. Someone gave me a couple of motrin and some ice for my knee. I sat for about an hour and then got up and walked around some more. Later I drove back to my girl friend’s house in Harrisburg, as I would be flying out early the next morning to get back to Oregon.

By 5am, I was unable to walk. I was pushed in a wheel chair at the airport to my gate. In Chicago, I had plenty of time between my flights and went to the Chicago Airport Medical Clinic where X-Rays were taken. It was there that they confirmed my worst fear- I had broken my knee cap. It was broken clean in half horizontally. My first thought was not, How will I take care of my 4 kids? or How will I get home from the airport?, but Luckily my next 60 mile walk is not until August- I should be healed by then. I truly am a 3-Day addict!

Back in Oregon, I went to see the Orthopedic Surgeon and had more X-Rays. So far, so good. The bone looks to be healing and I am hoping that I will not need surgery. I just had X-Rays taken again on Friday and the Dr. feels that I can get away with just wearing a full leg brace (immobilizer) to keep my leg straight. I have not been able to drive for the past 2 weeks, or to walk without crutches. I have had to bring in more help to get orders packed and shipped and it is driving me crazy to have to slow down during my busiest month of the year. On the up side, I have been forced to slow down, get more sleep spend more time with my kids, and take better care of myself.

So- the craziness of Pinktober is over. Have you had your mammogram this year? Have you done your monthly self breast exam? My 16-year-old daughter Sedona had her first breast exam last week. The Doctor is aware that I carry the BRCA2 gene mutation and my daughter has a 50/50 chance of having this same gene mutation. She explained to Sedona that she should start doing self breast exams to know her breasts and changes in her breasts. Have you talked to your daughters/ sisters/ friends about this? Please remember that early detection saves lives. I would not be here today if I had waited until I was 40 for my first mammogram. I found my lump just after my 33rd birthday. That lump turned out to be cancer.
Team Pink Wings:
For those of you that are new to Pink Wings, the Pink Wings team raised nearly $48,000 for the Susan G. Komen Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day 60 mile walk this past summer. We had 21 team members from all over the country (19 walkers and 2 crew members). One team member, Judy Narde, was unable to walk with us in Boston and switched to the Atlanta 3-Day. She started a Pink Wings team for Atlanta and they just finished their 60 mile walk last weekend. She pulled together 8 Pink Wings team members for the Atlanta Walk and so far they have raised over $13,200!!

Team Pink Wings will be walking in Chicago in August for the 2010 Breast Cancer 3-Day 60 mile walk and we are up to 6 team members so far, including our first male! If you would like to join the team please go to the3day.org and register for the walk. Use the code POWER10 to get a $35 discount on your registration. Choose Pink Wings for your team and type in the password pinkwings. Our team is open to anyone who is up for the walk. Whether you are a first time walker or a veteran walker, whether you walk quickly or are a back of the packer like me- all are welcome to join Pink Wings!! I just ask that you have a great attitude and are willing to make new friends.

New Book:

I am proud to announce that a new book that I was photographed for has just come out. The book is called, Lives Inspired: Portraits of Breast Cancer Survivors. This book is produced by Carolyn Jones, President and Founder of PrivacyWear Inc.  This beautiful book highlights breast cancer survivors. It is a large coffee table book with wonderful color and black and white photos of survivors young and old. I do not yet know where this book will be made available, but I was so happy to receive my copy in the mail from PrivacyWear.

New Items at Pink Wings:

I have added some new items to the Pink Wings website including new pink ribbon pins, baby I Care onesies and a Pink Camo Romper, teal ribbon bracelets and more pink ribbon socks.
