Pink Wings July Newsletter and Specials

Some exciting news…but also terrifying.  My family was contacted about doing a part in a documentary film called The Human Face of Big Data directed by filmmaker Sandy Smolan. They wanted to talk to a family who was impacted by BRCA gene testing. As many of you know, I am BRCA 2 positive …I have the gene mutation for Breast and Ovarian Cancer. I found this out after being diagnosed with breast cancer 2 times by the young age of 35. There had been no history of breast cancer in my family that I knew of. My youngest sister tested negative, but my other sister tested positive and had her breasts and ovaries removed in 2007 at the age of 39 (just like Angelina Jolie did this year).  I have 4 children, but only my oldest daughter, Sedona, is my biological child. My other children were adopted. Sedona is just 19 (she turns 20 next month), but has wanted to do gene testing ever since she turned 18.  The documentary follows our family for a day as we get together with my sister and her kids and then drive to Portland to meet with the genetics counselor for my daughter to do her testing. They film my daughter as she does the test and then film us leading a FORCE meeting (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered).  The camera crew is also hoping to film Sedona as she gets her results. We had hoped the results would be in by last week, but it is going on week 4 and we still have not heard from the genetic counselor yet. The results should come in this week. Sedona and I wished on a wish bone (both with the same wish- that her BRCA gene test would come out negative), and we are asking for prayers and good thoughts from others. If her testing comes out positive- she will have many decisions to make in her young life about her future. If she tests negative- I will breathe a sigh of relief…as this is something that I have worried about passing on to her for over 15 years now. Hard to believe that I was tested when she was just 5-years-old, and next month she will turn 20 and will know her results of this test. I will send out more info about the documentary and her results as I get it.  To view some of the director’s amazing work go to: http://www.luminous-content.com/

Here are some photos from the filming. I felt a bit like a reality TV show…John and Kate Plus 8 or Keeping up with the Kardashians as the crew followed us around J

Filming the kids on the trampoline in my sister’s backyard.

Sedona’s reading of choice as she awaits her BRCA gene testing- How to Cure Cancer

The following week, we drove the RV to Southern California with my kids for vacation. We spent time with friends at the beach, the pool, the lake and California Adventure Park.  While in L.A., my 11-year-old daughter Sienna decided to cut off her hair for Locks of Love again. Here are the adorable photos.

Pink Wings October 2012 Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

It is October- Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is also the anniversary of my diagnosis of breast cancer. On October 2nd, 2012 I became a 16-year breast cancer survivor. I am one of the lucky young women with breast cancer- I beat the disease, not once, but 2 times in just 3 years (by the age of 35). But many other women and men are not so lucky. I have lost so many friends to Breast Cancer in the last 2 years. These were young women with the hopes of getting married, having children, growing old. Things that most people just take for granted. A post on one young stage 4 breast cancer survivor’s Facebook page stated that she has a photo of her with 14 other stage 4 women from last year’s Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference. Of the 15 women in the photo- just a year later- only 3 of them are still alive today. With all the pink out there this month and all of the events going on to raise money- I feel that people are thinking we are beating this disease. But- it has been 16 years since I was diagnosed, 13 years since I started walking the 60 mile 3 Day walks, 16 years since I began raising what is now over $500,000 in the fight against breast cancer…and we are still losing people every day to this disease. Please stop for a moment today in your busy schedule to send prayers out to those who have lost their mother, grandmother, sister, wife, daughter, best friend, aunt, or cousin to this disease. Stop and send a prayer to those that continue to fight for their life. Stop and realize how lucky you are to still be here on this beautiful planet. As I like to say, “Every day above ground is a good day- it sure beats the alternative?”

This fall has been a very busy one for me. I have had booths at the Susan G. Komen Health Expo in Portland, Oregon, the Discover Pink Walk in Salem, Oregon, the Walk for the Cause in Albany, Oregon, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Conference in Harrisburg, PA and the Girlfriend’s ½ Marathon in Vancouver, Washington. This week I fly out to Orlando, Florida for the FORCE conference (Facing Our Risk Of Cancer Empowered). The first weekend in November, I will have a Pink Wings booth in Los Angeles at the weSPARK Run/Walk on the Universal City Studios Back Lot. I am also shipping out lots of pink ribbon pins, pink ribbon knee socks (for dance teams, volleyball teams, cheer squads, 3-Day Walkers and soccer teams), and pink ribbon sweatbands for football players and other sport teams. I still have plenty of these items in stock, so it is not too late to get an order in.

In September, my sister and I also held our 2nd annual Kick With Force Karate Fundraiser and a Girl’s Night Out Silpada Jewelry and Pink Wings Product Party. We raised over $2,200 for FORCE at these events.

New Product:

Our new cross ribbon pins and cross pink ribbon pendants/charms are now in and selling like crazy. I sold out of the ones I brought to Pennsylvania. These cross pins and pendants are just beautiful. The pins come in pink, teal (for Ovarian Cancer Awareness) and Purple (for Relay for Life, Pancreatic Cancer and All Cancer Awareness). The pendant comes in pink only.

As with all the pins on the Pink Wings website, they are great quality Cloisonne. The pins and the pendant are 1 ¼” tall. Pins sell for $10 and the charm is $12. These are also available to purchase in bulk for fundraising.

The 2012 corsette pink ribbon pins are in and are just adorable. We liked the design so much that we brought in 2 versions. We have a light pink glitter bust pin and a dark pink glitter bust pin. Pins are $10 each.

Our New Black Survivor shirts are a hit and selling out quickly. We already had to bring in a new batch. They come in sizes S-3XL and they run big. They also come without the word Survivor. The new shirts are $20 in white and $22 in black. This design will now be offered as a black zip-up jacket. It is actually like a zip hoodie- but without the hood. The jacket is a very soft, sweatshirt like fabric. It runs a bit small so you might want to consider ordering one size up, however the sleeves are really long. The jacket has 2 muff pockets on the lower front. The back of the jacket is blank. The jacket is $45.00 and comes in sizes 2-2XL. The pink ribbon on the jacket is glitter. The jacket will be in next week, just in time for the cooler weather.

Survivors at the Play for the Cure.                             Our new zip jacket!

The new Wings & Ribbon design is now silk-screened on the back of the Bella tanks, the gradient t-shirts, the pink v-neck shirts and the short sleeve 2fer shirts. They look great with a crystal ribbon on the front and the wings and ribbon on the back.

We also brought a smaller version of the wings and ribbon design in for the kids shirts. SKU # is 1701. The pink ribbon is glitter! Kids shirts are available in sizes XS-L and in many different colors including:

Light Pink, Hot Pink, Black, White, Lime Green, Navy Blue, Carolina Blue, Red, Grey and Yellow. I will get them on the website asap! The kids silk screened shirts are $20.

What an amazing summer this has been.  I have had a “List of things to do before I die” up on my bulletin board that I wrote when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996.

The first thing on my list was- I Want To:

1.Go to Africa

Well- it took more than 15 years…but I finally realized my dream and took that trip to Africa. It was a lot of planning, but so well worth it. I took my oldest daughter with me and we spent nearly a month in east Africa (Kenya and Tanzania).  We went on 3 safaris, did a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara, visited a pre-school in the slums of Nairobi, spent 4 days on the Island of Zanzibar, rode a camel on the beach, saw incredible animals and met the most amazing people. This was a trip of a lifetime!  I urge all of my Pink Wings customers to make their Bucket List and start checking things off that list. My list helps me to remember what is important to me and keeps me focused on my dreams.

The Avon Walks, Race for the Cure, Relay for Life and 3-Day walks are well under way now and for those of you that need pink ribbon items for fundraising- I have tons of it! There are over 200 ribbon awareness pins to choose from, dozens of awareness key chains, socks, totes, lanyards, car magnets and silicone bracelets.  I also have Pink Ribbon Fundraising Kits.  All of the Wicking Pink Ribbon Shirts are now in and they look fantastic. They come in Black, White and Pink and in sizes Small-2XL. I also have some with Survivor on them in all 3 colors. Shirts run a little small, so you may want to order up one size.  These shirts are also available for teams at a quantity discount. Email me at info@pinkwings.com for more info and pricing for teams.

The arm warmers are still on sale for just $10 a pair. I have also kept the

wholesale and fundraising pricing down on these.  Arm Warmers are great to purchase for your entire team or your business to wear for pink ribbon awareness. Some walkers like to wear these as leg warmers too (they will go from your knee to your ankle).

Pink Wings children's arm warmersThe children’s arm warmers are now in stock and are also available at fundraising and wholesale pricing. They are $10 each and will be on the Pink Wings website soon. The children’s arm warmers do not come in Pink Ribbon They are available in 6 different colors/styles including black, grey, red and white stripe, and multi-color stripe with a crystal peace sign. So Cute!!

Our new Africa pink ribbon pin is in stock and will not only have proceeds going to breast cancer, but will also have proceeds going to sponsor a child at a pre-school in Nairobi.  Order yours today!

Macintosh HD:Users:czinszer:Desktop:africa pin .jpg

Our new pink ribbon lanyards are also in stock. Order yours in Pink or Gradient Pink (goes from light pink to dark pink). They are just $10 each and will be great to put your name badge on for work or to put your keys on.

Pink Wings June Newsletter and Specials

Summer is here and the kids are out of school. I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by. The kids are having a great time in Vacation Bible School and Mega Sports Camp.

For the first time in nearly 12 years, Pink Wings will have a few days with no shipping orders. There will be limited orders going out between July 6 and July 17th. Orders will go out a few times a week the rest of July through August 2nd and then Pink Wings will be back on the normal schedule of shipping nearly every day.

This is because I am finally going to make my dream trip a reality. Going to Africa for safari has been on my list of things to do before I die for nearly 15 years (from the time I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996).

In less than 2 weeks, my oldest daughter Sedona and I will be on a plane to Nairobi, Kenya. We will travel throughout Kenya and Tanzania for nearly 4 weeks!

Our first stop will be to visit a school in the slums of Huruma to bring clothes, school supplies, medical supplies and candy. If any of my wonderful Pink Wings customers would like to contribute to this school, or to help me pay for extra items – please email me at info@pinkwings.com .   Checks would be written out to: Good News Productions International with a note in the memo- FOR CHIPO MAKAYA.

I have been spending the week with Chipo and her beautiful daughters here in Oregon.  She has done a wonderful job of fulfilling a need in the slums of Nairobi- helping these children to learn English, feeding them, and giving them hope for the future. I am sure that going to Huruma to visit the school will be one of the highlights of my trip to Africa.  I am so excited to be bringing over supplies to help these children.

Here is some info about Liberty Visions School in Kenya:

Liberty Visions set up a small resource library in 2009 in Huruma Village, Nairobi.  At that time 6 children attended remedial English lessons after school guided by 2 part time teachers. By January 2011 a full class of 22 nursery school children had been enrolled with about 15 older kids attending the library session in the afternoon. January 2012 saw us enroll 24 first year nursery children as the others moved on to their 2nd year of nursery school- called Pre-Unit 1.

New Items:

Our new wicking shirts will be ready this month. The new design of the large pink ribbon and wings will be on the front on the left hand side of the shirts (just like our new v-neck t-shirts). The shirts are available in light pink, white or black and in sizes S, M, L, XL and 2XL. The wicking shirts run a little small, so you may want to go up one size when ordering.  These new shirts will be perfect for training and walking in the 3 Day or Avon 2 Day walks, yoga class, running, the gym, etc.

PINS and other Fundraising Items:

Now is a good time to order your pins in bulk and other items for your fundraising if you are participating in an upcoming Avon Walk, 3-Day Walk, Race for the Cure, Relay for Life, or other run or walk to raise money for cancer. Remember- our pins come in many colors besides Pink. We carry purple, teal, green, orange, yellow, gold, blue, white, etc.

Specials:

Order any Pink Wings shirt (adult or childs), hat or hoodie at RETAIL pricing and get a free pin of choice, temp. tattoo, silicone bracelet, bandana, and a Pink Wings key chain for free. This is over $20 of free pink ribbon goodies!!! Just type in FREE in the shipping comments at check out and be sure to mention the name of the free pin in the comments that you want me to send you. If no pin is mentioned- you will receive the Pink Wings plain pink ribbon pin.

Get 20% off your RETAIL order when you purchase before July 1st.  Enter the code: JUNE2012 to get 20% off your entire retail order.  Please note that you will not get 20% from your order donated if using the 20% off coupon code. The 20% off can be combined with the FREE goodies offer.

Custom Pins, key chains, lanyards, tattoos, silicone bracelets or charms/ pendants: Please go to Pinkwings.com and click on the Custom Items link to get more information about how Pink Wings can help your team or organization to make great quality custom items for your next walk or event. Minimums and pricing information are on the website.

Pink Wings January Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

The New Year is here and I am hoping this will be a healthy and happy year for my wonderful Pink Wings customers.

Please make a New Year’s resolution to schedule your mammograms and other screenings, as early detection is the best prevention. I had my first colonoscopy in December (2 years earlier than recommended) as my grandmother died of colon cancer and my mom is currently just finishing up her chemo treatments for colon cancer. I am glad I did this early, as I had to have 1 polyp removed. I now have to go in every 5 years instead of every 10- but that is a lot better than waiting and getting a diagnosis of cancer.

December was slow for Pink Wings, but I did have fun doing a radio show with my sister in Salem, Oregon about being a young survivor. My sister talked about being a Previvor, having had both her breasts removed without having a cancer diagnosis due to her BRCA2 status and my diagnosis.  We were also able to talk about the wonderful organization FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered- www.facingourrisk.org )

Edna Photos:Edna and her little friend.jpgOn a sad note- I lost my wonderful friend, Edna, to breast cancer in December.  She had just turned 40 on November 6th.  I met her at the Young Breast Cancer Survivor Conference about 10 years ago when she was first diagnosed. After 8 years cancer free, Edna was diagnosed again in September of 2010.  She fought long and hard. Edna was a black belt in Karate & the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon pin was designed from a photo of her. I donated the proceeds of the sales of the pin to help with Edna’s expenses and over $1,000 was raised in just 36 hours. I was touched to find out that an image of the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon Pin will be etched on Edna’s tombstone. Here is a photo of Edna with a little friend.

Buy a pin, key chain, bracelet, tote bag, pair of socks, cell phone bling, pink ribbon scarf, gloves or hat and glove set and get your second one for free. Second item will be exactly the same as the first item ordered. For example: you pay for a Bling Pink Ribbon Pin- you will get another Bling Pink Ribbon Pin for free,  (unless you write in the order comments at check out that there is a different item you want -for example: you would rather get a motorcycle pink ribbon pin for your free one).  If you pay for 4 pins, you will receive 8 (getting 4 free.) Please do not pay for the extra 4 pins. If you have any questions about this special- please feel free to call or email me first, before placing your order.

Email is info@pinkwings.com and phone is 310-663-0482.  Make sure to type in BOGO in the shipping comments at check out or you will not receive your free items.

I am also offering 20% off your RETAIL order until January 30th. Please write in JAN20 for your Coupon Code at check out.  As we are giving you 20% off, we will NOT send 20% to your walk or event as a donation. If you would rather have the 20% go to your event instead of as a discount to your order- please mention that in the shipping comments.

Please note- you can get both the BOGO and 20% off on your orders, as long as you type in JAN20 in the Coupon Code and type BOGO in the shipping comments at check out. There is no limit to the amount of items you can order- but this is for RETAIL orders only and is not available for our wholesale and fundraising customers.

I am also continuing to sell through the last of the 4 Ribbon Hoodies. pink hoodie .jpgperiwinkle hoodie .jpg

Upcoming Events:

I am very excited about upcoming events.  My first booth will be in New Orleans at the Conference for Young Woman with Breast Cancer. I am flying out a bit early as I have never been to New Orleans before and I can’t wait to explore the city.  I will be meeting my girlfriend Lexi, from Australia, who is also a young survivor.  The conference will be from February 24-26, 2012.  Here is a link to the conference website for more information: http://www.c4yw.org/

The following weekend I will be in Las Vegas for the Power Symposium and the weekend after that, I will travel to Orlando, Florida for the Essentially Women Trade Show. I love getting the chance to fly around and meet my customers.  It is also nice to get out of the rain here in Oregon.

I have signed up to walk in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in August of 2012. It will be my 13th walk.  There is a possibility that I may go on a Safari to Africa this summer- if I do that- I may need to pass on doing a 3-Day Walk this year.  Going to Africa has been on my “List of things to do before I die” since my first diagnosis with breast cancer in 1996. I think it is about time that I make this dream a reality! If any of my fantastic customers have info on a great Safari, or decent pricing for a Safari- please contact me at Courtney@pinkwings.com

On a closing note:

I love that they have Make A Wish Foundation for children with terminal illnesses, however, I feel that it is important to make wishes come true every year for your children and yourself.  It is a fact- we will all die someday, and many of us will pass away suddenly. Life is precious and we should make the most of our time here on Earth.  I ask my children- “What is a wish that you have?” and then I try to make it happen. 2 years ago, my girls wanted to be in a parade and my son wanted to ride on a Ferris Wheel.  Within the month of them telling me this, I got an email from AYSO saying they were looking for kids from the soccer teams to ride on the AYSO float in an upcoming parade…and after the parade- there was a festival with a Ferris Wheel. I made their wishes come true on the same day. The next wish the girls had was to go to Maui. We have been over twice now. My oldest daughter wished to go to the University of San Diego. She is starting her 2nd semester there this week. This wish will cost me a lot over the next 4 years J  One of my 9 year olds told me that her next wish is to eat a crepe at the top of the Eiffle Tower in Paris.  We just took her passport photos and I will try to make this happen in the next year or two. My wishes over the years have included buying a house, adopting children, quitting my teaching job, building a big Pink Wings Team for a 3-Day walk and going to Africa. It takes time (and money) to make these wishes come true- but it feels great! Take the time to have a conversation with your kids, your spouse, your parents, yourself…and make a wish come true in 2012!

Happy New Year,

Courtney

Pink Wings November Newsletter

posted by:

Happy November!

I hope you all had a fantastic October and a fun Halloween. I am happy to report that October was another record breaking month for Pink Wings for 2009 and we also broke the record for the most orders going out in a month in the entire history of Pink Wings!

During this busy month I had a Pink Wings booth at the Albany Walk for the Cause, the Salem Discover Pink Walk and the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Conference. The Pennsylvania conference was in Harrisburg just days before the Philly Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. I had friends participating as walkers in the event as well as on Lunch crew and decided I would make the trip to Philly for the weekend to visit. This turned out to be a very bad idea.

The Philly 3-Day turned into a Philly 1-Day because of heavy rains (they called it Noreasters). The walkers were amazing and many decided to put in 20 miles of walking a day inside the malls outside of Philly. On Saturday, nearly 800 walkers showed up at the King Of Prussia Mall. These walkers were supported by cheering crowds made up of family, supporters and mall goers. The 3-Day supplied lunch and the lunch crew showed up at the mall decked out in their 3-Day costumes handing out bag lunches and bottles of water to the walkers.

On Day 3, the walkers were finally able to put in their mileage outside. It was raining for much of the morning, but the walkers were in great spirits, as they had been all weekend. I helped my friends set up the lunch inside South Philly High School. The cafeteria looked amazing by the time they were finished. Music was blaring and the lunch crew was cheering as walkers began to come in. I was wearing a pair of UGG like boots that were very slick on the bottom. A couple of times over the weekend, I had almost slipped and fallen, but someone was always there to catch me. And then it happened….I took a step with my right foot and began to take a step with my left foot when I slipped on the wet floor and slammed down on my left knee. I heard a crack, but thought it was the sound of my knee hitting the floor. People rushed to help me, but embarrassed, I got up and walked on, telling them that I was ok. I sat down at a table, knowing that I wasn’t ok. I was in a lot of pain. Someone gave me a couple of motrin and some ice for my knee. I sat for about an hour and then got up and walked around some more. Later I drove back to my girl friend’s house in Harrisburg, as I would be flying out early the next morning to get back to Oregon.

By 5am, I was unable to walk. I was pushed in a wheel chair at the airport to my gate. In Chicago, I had plenty of time between my flights and went to the Chicago Airport Medical Clinic where X-Rays were taken. It was there that they confirmed my worst fear- I had broken my knee cap. It was broken clean in half horizontally. My first thought was not, How will I take care of my 4 kids? or How will I get home from the airport?, but Luckily my next 60 mile walk is not until August- I should be healed by then. I truly am a 3-Day addict!

Back in Oregon, I went to see the Orthopedic Surgeon and had more X-Rays. So far, so good. The bone looks to be healing and I am hoping that I will not need surgery. I just had X-Rays taken again on Friday and the Dr. feels that I can get away with just wearing a full leg brace (immobilizer) to keep my leg straight. I have not been able to drive for the past 2 weeks, or to walk without crutches. I have had to bring in more help to get orders packed and shipped and it is driving me crazy to have to slow down during my busiest month of the year. On the up side, I have been forced to slow down, get more sleep spend more time with my kids, and take better care of myself.

So- the craziness of Pinktober is over. Have you had your mammogram this year? Have you done your monthly self breast exam? My 16-year-old daughter Sedona had her first breast exam last week. The Doctor is aware that I carry the BRCA2 gene mutation and my daughter has a 50/50 chance of having this same gene mutation. She explained to Sedona that she should start doing self breast exams to know her breasts and changes in her breasts. Have you talked to your daughters/ sisters/ friends about this? Please remember that early detection saves lives. I would not be here today if I had waited until I was 40 for my first mammogram. I found my lump just after my 33rd birthday. That lump turned out to be cancer.
Team Pink Wings:
For those of you that are new to Pink Wings, the Pink Wings team raised nearly $48,000 for the Susan G. Komen Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day 60 mile walk this past summer. We had 21 team members from all over the country (19 walkers and 2 crew members). One team member, Judy Narde, was unable to walk with us in Boston and switched to the Atlanta 3-Day. She started a Pink Wings team for Atlanta and they just finished their 60 mile walk last weekend. She pulled together 8 Pink Wings team members for the Atlanta Walk and so far they have raised over $13,200!!

Team Pink Wings will be walking in Chicago in August for the 2010 Breast Cancer 3-Day 60 mile walk and we are up to 6 team members so far, including our first male! If you would like to join the team please go to the3day.org and register for the walk. Use the code POWER10 to get a $35 discount on your registration. Choose Pink Wings for your team and type in the password pinkwings. Our team is open to anyone who is up for the walk. Whether you are a first time walker or a veteran walker, whether you walk quickly or are a back of the packer like me- all are welcome to join Pink Wings!! I just ask that you have a great attitude and are willing to make new friends.

New Book:

I am proud to announce that a new book that I was photographed for has just come out. The book is called, Lives Inspired: Portraits of Breast Cancer Survivors. This book is produced by Carolyn Jones, President and Founder of PrivacyWear Inc.  This beautiful book highlights breast cancer survivors. It is a large coffee table book with wonderful color and black and white photos of survivors young and old. I do not yet know where this book will be made available, but I was so happy to receive my copy in the mail from PrivacyWear.

New Items at Pink Wings:

I have added some new items to the Pink Wings website including new pink ribbon pins, baby I Care onesies and a Pink Camo Romper, teal ribbon bracelets and more pink ribbon socks.
