Pink Wings September Newsletter and Specials

Summer is over and the kids are all back in school. I have had a fantastic summer with my family traveling to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Mt. Shasta, Wisconsin, Chicago and Michigan. Some of the highlights:

Camping in our RV at Refugio State Park in Santa Barbara next to the family from the reality TV show “Little People Big World”. 2011:07:08:20110708-220131:CIMG2795.JPGSpending time with Pink Wings teammates in Chicago.2011:08:09:20110809-102148:CIMG3142.JPG

Cheering on walkers in Chicago and Michigan at the 3 Day for the Cure:

2011:08:14:20110814-201958:IMG_0377.jpg2011:08:14:20110814-201958:IMG_0376.jpg  and hanging out with my cousins and their kids in Michigan and meeting all of their adorable animals. The Alpacas and the puppies were so cute! 2011:08:10:20110810-211353:CIMG3165.JPG2011:08:14:20110814-201958:IMG_0362.JPG. We ended our trip with a speedboat tour of Chicago on the last day of our vacation. What a blast!  I hope you all have had time to enjoy your summer with the special people in your life.

My last trip of the summer was taking my 18-year-old daughter to San Diego to move her into the dorms at the University of San Diego.  I can’t believe she is already in college. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and again in 1998- my daughter was just 3 and then 5 years old. I sometimes wondered if I would be alive to see her graduate from high school and begin college. I am so happy to be here to share this special time with her!

There was a fantastic article in the Oregonian Newspaper about me and my sister and the struggle we face with the knowledge of our breast cancer gene mutation. It was on the front page of the Sunday paper on the day of the Portland Race for the Cure! Here is the link to view the article: www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2011/09/oregon_sisters_struggle_with_k.html

I am gearing up for what will be our busy time as October and Breast Cancer Awareness month are just around the corner. Many new pins have arrived including: Peace Heart Cure, Pink Butterfly, and Purple Butterfly.  We also have a great Karate key chain with the pink ribbon and teal ribbon (for Ovarian cancer) and the words Kick with FORCE (for facing our risk of cancer empowered).

Our Football pink ribbon pins will be arriving in just a week.

We are keeping busy, designing custom pins for teams, organizations and businesses. If you have a logo, an idea or a slogan that you would like to see on a pin- check out our custom pin pricing at www.pinkwings.com  Click on the link on the left that says Custom Items.   We have the popular pink ribbon knee socks back in stock. These are fantastic for cheerleaders, dance teams, volleyball, basketball and soccer teams raising awareness for breast cancer in October. They are also great for walkers. The knee socks are $10 a pair or $5 a pair when purchased by the dozen. I will also be getting more of the pink ribbon sweat bands in for October. The football teams love these!  I have new pink ribbon ankle socks and crew socks, gloves and glove and hat sets with pink ribbons.  We are carrying many of the ribbon awareness pins in other colors now including teal, grey, white, gold, blue, purple, orange and green.

I have tons of the Faith Burn Out pink ribbon shirts in stock as well as the long sleeve shirts. We will have a new black with white sleeve 2fer pink ribbon shirt on the website soon. We are selling out of our brown with pink sleeve 2 fer shirts. Get them while they last!

Pink Wings Chicago 3 Day for the Cure update:

I am happy to announce that the Pink Wings team for the Chicago 3 Day for the Cure is already at 17 members! We are adding new team members almost every week and should quickly surpass the 21 team members that we had at the Boston Breast Cancer 3 Day last year.  We have walkers and crew from all over the country.  If you would like to join our team as either a walker or crew member, simply go to www.the3day.org and click on register. Choose Chicago for your walk and then type Pink Wings in the search. Click on the blue link that says Register as a team member and type in pinkwings for the code to join the team. It’s that easy!  This is a great way to get in shape, meet new people, have an experience of a lifetime and raise money and awareness for breast cancer. What have you got to lose?!  The Chicago walk is August 6-8, 2010.

Up Coming Events:

For the 7th year in a row, Pink Wings will have a booth at the Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer in Atlanta, GA.  The conference is from Friday, February 26th to Sunday February 28th at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel.  For more information go to: http://www.youngsurvivorsconference.org/

This conference is so important for young women diagnosed with breast cancer and it is the only one of its kind. Over the last several years I have given a guardian angel scholarship so that all young women can attend, regardless of their financial situation. Unfortunately this year, the demand for the scholarships has been much higher than ever before and funds are running out. I challenge other pink ribbon websites, stores and individuals to match my donation of $540 to help young women attend this very important conference. Here is part of the letter I just received from the Young Survival Coalition asking for help:

For over a decade Young Survival Coalition has worked hard to make sure that no

women diagnosed with breast cancer under 40 faced this disease alone. An essential part of that mission is bringing together women, physicians and caregivers, fostering an environment of learning, support and fellowship.

One of the ways we do this is by co-hosting the Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer. As the 2010 conference date approaches, we are both thrilled and heavy hearted to have so many people hoping to attend. The opportunity to attend the conference can be life changing. For many of us, this year has been financially difficult. Through fundraising efforts and sponsorship, we have been able to provide both travel and registration grants to over 350 attendees thus far.   But there are so many more women still hoping to receive a grant to attend and we have simply run out of funds.

This year, we have seen an unprecedented need by potential attendees for financial assistance. To date, we have provided nearly $200,000 in scholarship funds, but many more women who need financial assistance are still hoping to attend. Nearly 100 young women are on the waitlist anxiously hoping that additional funds will become available. Can we count on your support? With your generous support, you can help send more young survivors to this important conference and help them to get the information and support they need while facing one of the most challenging times of their lives.

A gift of:

$600 – will provide a full travel grant to one woman

$250 – will provide two partial travel grants

$135 – will provide a registration grant to one woman

A gift of any amount will make a difference.  You can make a secure online donation by going to this web address and clicking the Donate button. https://www.youngsurvival.org/donate/ Please put “Conference” in the comment box. You can also mail a check written out to Young Survival Coalition (with the word “Conference Donation” in the MEMO or on a note) and send to:

Thank you for anything that you can do. This organization means the world to me as it was here that I learned I was not alone as a 33-year-old diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago.

I will be in Louisville Kentucky on April 20th for the Essentially Women Focus on the Future tradeshow. If any of my wonderful Pink Wings customers live in this area and would like to come out and help me at my booth for this event, I would love to hear from you. Just email me at czinszer@yahoo.com

I will be in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada from June 10-13th, 2010 for the International Dragon Boat Festival.

Pink Wings December Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

Just a few weeks until the holidays are here, then on to 2010. Where did this year go?

Pink Wings has had another successful year, thanks to you- my customers! With this recession, many pink ribbon websites and stores have had to close. I have been very careful this last year on keeping inventory down and only restocking when I absolutely have to. I have also been careful about bringing in new products and trying to keep costs down. I apologize if there were times when you wanted to order an item and we were out of stock, but I wanted to ride out this recession and remain in business. So far, my plan has worked and Pink Wings actually had a record breaking year. We had more people ordering each month than ever before.

I am also proud to say that I have been able to keep up with the donations given from the sale of pink ribbon items on the website as well as at events and conferences. With these sales and also the money brought in from various walks that team Pink Wings has participated in, we are closing in on the $200,000 mark!! I can’t wait til the day when I can say that Pink Wings has helped to donate 1 million dollars. I know that day will come in the near future. If you are participating in a walk for cancer in 2010, ( 3-Day, Avon, Relay for Life, Race for the Cure, etc.) please make sure to note that in the shipping comments at checkout when ordering from the Pink Wings website so that I can give a donation to your event. I am usually able to donate 20% of your retail order minus shipping. This does not include the custom pins or arm warmers and will not be given on wholesale or fundraising orders.

Upcoming Events:

December 8, 2009 Book Launch

I will be flying to Los Angeles for the book launch of Lives Inspired: Portraits of Breast Cancer Survivors. This beautiful book was done by a wonderful lady named Carolyn Jones in honor of her mother who passed away from breast cancer. It is a large coffee table book with amazing photographs (color and black and white) and stories of breast cancer survivors. This would make a great holiday gift for someone special in your life. My photo and comments are on pages 66 and 67.

Books are available to purchase at: http://www.privacywear.com/shop/view/?id=422
February 26-28, 2010 YSC Annual Conference in Atlanta

This is the 10th Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer. I have attended this amazing conference for about 7 years now and have a Pink Wings booth every year. Scholarships are available to attend the conference if you apply early. Pink Wings is proud to donate $500 every year to the Guardian Angel Scholarship fund. Go to www.youngsurvivorsconference.org for more information.

August 6-8, 2010 Chicago Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk

Last year the Pink Wings team of 21 women from all over the country raised $47,447.08 for the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. We were the 3rd largest team and raised the 4th highest amount of money. We also had a team in Atlanta and they raised $13,246. This year Pink Wings will have a team in Chicago (we already have 11 team members, including our first guy, and are #5 in the top fundraisers). We are also going to have a team in Boston again, headed up by one of our former team members. If you would like to sign up for the Chicago 3-Day and be part of the Pink Wings team, just type in pinkwings for the password and select the Pink Wings team. Go to www.3day.org to register today! All are welcome!! We love to have walkers and crew from all over the country. We will help you with your fundraising and will walk beside you. Training walks will begin in Chicago in 2010 for the locals.

Courtney’s News:

So, my knee is healing well and I will not need surgery. For those of you who have not heard, I fell and broke my knee cap in October. One month after my fall, my 16-year-old daughter was in a car accident and totaled her car. That is the call every mother dreads. It went something like this: “Hi Mom. I was just in an accident. I totaled my car. I am ok.” Teenagers- straight and to the point!

On a good note- I had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family at my house and can’t wait to celebrate Christmas. We will cut our tree tomorrow and start putting the lights on the house.

Days after Thanksgiving marked one year that I have been acting as a single parent with 4 kids (ages 3-16). My husband moved back to California a year ago and has never come back. This year has been difficult for the kids to adjust to a single parent household, but they have been a great help and the transition gets smoother every day. My heart and prayers go out to all the single moms (and dads) out there this holiday season. It is a difficult road with lots of challenges, but one that comes with many rewards! Watching my 3-year-old ride his bike without training wheels, listening to my 7-year-old daughters read each night, and walking beside my 16-year-old daughter for 60 miles in the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day were just a few highlights of this year. Take time to cherish the special moments in your life with loved ones this holiday season.

A new bracelet is being added to Pink Wings. These simple Pink Ribbon elastic bracelets with different sayings are just $5. Photos will be on the website soon. They make great stocking stuffers.

A cute new shirt will be available for a limited time only. It is a burn out pink shirt with brown on it. It has a crystal pink ribbon on the front. The name of the shirt is FAITH. I hope to have it on the site in a week or 2. I had a test run with these shirts and they sold out quickly! They are in junior sizing S-XL and run extremely small. Order one size up.
