Pink Wings April Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

I hope everyone is having a fantastic spring.  My family and I have been enjoying time on the ski slopes together nearly every weekend. My young kids are also busy with dance competitions and soccer games. My oldest daughter is finishing up with her freshman year at the University of San Diego.  Time is flying by! It is hard to believe that she was just 3 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time.

The new pins are now in at Pink Wings. We have all pins in stock except for the Black Bust Pink Ribbon pin, which is sold out again. As the walk season begins, more orders are coming in for the Pink Wings Fundraising Kits

SKU #1270  and SKU# 1004 .

The Pins in Bulk (SKU #1285, and SKU #1329) are also great. You can mix and match the pins you purchase to maximize your fundraising. These are great items to sell when raising money for your upcoming events.  We also have tons of pink ribbon knee socks in stock. They are available in white, black, grey or pink and can be purchased at discount pricing when ordering in bulk. These are fantastic for walk teams, dance teams, cheerleaders, soccer, volleyball, soft ball and basketball teams!

We still have a few of the pink ribbon hoodies for sale in Pink.  I have just 5 left and they are all size small. I also have a few hoodies in Periwinkle Blue (sizes XL and 3XL only). The Periwinkle blue hoodies run big. We also have the 2-tone Zip hoodies available in all sizes (S-2XL). The Zip Hoodie runs small- so it is best to buy one size larger than you normally wear. I have 2 of the children’s hoodies left in size small only (it fits a girl size 3-4). Buys yours today!!

The Tye Dye Pink Ribbon Shirts in Pink and Black (SKU# 1681), the Camo Pink Ribbon shirt (SKU #1478), and the Faith Burn Out shirt (SKU# 1131) all continue to be big sellers.

We will have a new Pink Wings Pink Ribbon shirt available in May. It will come in Survivor with Pink Ribbon, or just Pink Ribbon. Colors available will be Black or White.

If your team is looking for cute pink ribbon shirts to wear at your event- I do bulk pricing on the Pink Wings shirts. Most come in sizes S-2XL and the camo comes up to a 3XL. I will also send you Pink Wings temporary tattoos for your team for each shirt ordered. Email me at info@pinkwings.com for more information and pricing.

Don’t forget to check out our new Co-Survivor Pink Ribbon pins. These are great for those that have supported a woman (or man) going through treatments for breast cancer. They come in 3 styles.

Our butterfly ribbon pin now comes in 3 colors; pink, teal and purple.

Pink Wings January Newsletter and Specials

posted by:

The New Year is here and I am hoping this will be a healthy and happy year for my wonderful Pink Wings customers.

Please make a New Year’s resolution to schedule your mammograms and other screenings, as early detection is the best prevention. I had my first colonoscopy in December (2 years earlier than recommended) as my grandmother died of colon cancer and my mom is currently just finishing up her chemo treatments for colon cancer. I am glad I did this early, as I had to have 1 polyp removed. I now have to go in every 5 years instead of every 10- but that is a lot better than waiting and getting a diagnosis of cancer.

December was slow for Pink Wings, but I did have fun doing a radio show with my sister in Salem, Oregon about being a young survivor. My sister talked about being a Previvor, having had both her breasts removed without having a cancer diagnosis due to her BRCA2 status and my diagnosis.  We were also able to talk about the wonderful organization FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered- www.facingourrisk.org )

Edna Photos:Edna and her little friend.jpgOn a sad note- I lost my wonderful friend, Edna, to breast cancer in December.  She had just turned 40 on November 6th.  I met her at the Young Breast Cancer Survivor Conference about 10 years ago when she was first diagnosed. After 8 years cancer free, Edna was diagnosed again in September of 2010.  She fought long and hard. Edna was a black belt in Karate & the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon pin was designed from a photo of her. I donated the proceeds of the sales of the pin to help with Edna’s expenses and over $1,000 was raised in just 36 hours. I was touched to find out that an image of the Karate Girl Pink Ribbon Pin will be etched on Edna’s tombstone. Here is a photo of Edna with a little friend.

Upcoming Events:

I am very excited about upcoming events.  My first booth will be in New Orleans at the Conference for Young Woman with Breast Cancer. I am flying out a bit early as I have never been to New Orleans before and I can’t wait to explore the city.  I will be meeting my girlfriend Lexi, from Australia, who is also a young survivor.  The conference will be from February 24-26, 2012.  Here is a link to the conference website for more information: http://www.c4yw.org/

The following weekend I will be in Las Vegas for the Power Symposium and the weekend after that, I will travel to Orlando, Florida for the Essentially Women Trade Show. I love getting the chance to fly around and meet my customers.  It is also nice to get out of the rain here in Oregon.

I have signed up to walk in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in August of 2012. It will be my 13th walk.  There is a possibility that I may go on a Safari to Africa this summer- if I do that- I may need to pass on doing a 3-Day Walk this year.  Going to Africa has been on my “List of things to do before I die” since my first diagnosis with breast cancer in 1996. I think it is about time that I make this dream a reality! If any of my fantastic customers have info on a great Safari, or decent pricing for a Safari- please contact me at Courtney@pinkwings.com

On a closing note:

I love that they have Make A Wish Foundation for children with terminal illnesses, however, I feel that it is important to make wishes come true every year for your children and yourself.  It is a fact- we will all die someday, and many of us will pass away suddenly. Life is precious and we should make the most of our time here on Earth.  I ask my children- “What is a wish that you have?” and then I try to make it happen. 2 years ago, my girls wanted to be in a parade and my son wanted to ride on a Ferris Wheel.  Within the month of them telling me this, I got an email from AYSO saying they were looking for kids from the soccer teams to ride on the AYSO float in an upcoming parade…and after the parade- there was a festival with a Ferris Wheel. I made their wishes come true on the same day. The next wish the girls had was to go to Maui. We have been over twice now. My oldest daughter wished to go to the University of San Diego. She is starting her 2nd semester there this week. This wish will cost me a lot over the next 4 years J  One of my 9 year olds told me that her next wish is to eat a crepe at the top of the Eiffle Tower in Paris.  We just took her passport photos and I will try to make this happen in the next year or two. My wishes over the years have included buying a house, adopting children, quitting my teaching job, building a big Pink Wings Team for a 3-Day walk and going to Africa. It takes time (and money) to make these wishes come true- but it feels great! Take the time to have a conversation with your kids, your spouse, your parents, yourself…and make a wish come true in 2012!

Happy New Year,

Courtney

Walking 60 Miles again!

posted by:

HI,

I am sure many of you are pinked out by now- the color seems to be everywhere. I am hoping that the funds being raised this October and through the year are going to bring this dreadful disease to an end sooner rather than later. I lost 2 young friends to breast cancer this year and another young friend is currently fighting for her life. My 3-Day Walker Coach from one of my first walks back in the year 2000 is also fighting the disease. She is just 38, single and has no kids. She lost both of her breasts to breast cancer in April and is on chemo right now. She lost her mom to breast cancer 8 years ago. Enough is enough! I am angry about what this disease is doing to my friends- what this disease does to families.

As I have said in the past- I will walk every year until we find a cure. Little did I know that I would still be walking 12 years later- with no cure in site. In 2009, the Pink Wings team raised nearly $48,000 for the Boston 3 Day. In 2010, the Pink Wings team was the #1 team in the country for the Chicago walk, raising nearly $90,000!!! This year I am walking with a much smaller Pink Wings team in Dallas the first weekend of November. I have raised over $700 so far. I have $1,600 to go to reach the required minimum of $2,300.

With your help, I can meet this goal.

Just 2 weeks ago I celebrated 15 years as a cancer survivor. I am one of the lucky ones. I was here to help my daughter get off to college and to send my son to kindergarten. I am here to see my girls dance in their dance recitals and to watch my son play in his football games. Others are not so lucky and this is why I continue to walk. Every time I meet a young girl or boy who has lost their mom to breast cancer, I wonder why. Why did their mom die and I lived? Why are my children so lucky to have their mom here with them still, when others have had to watch their moms pass away? I will never know the answer- but I can feel good about keeping up the fight and continuing to walk and raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.

I know that times are very tough right now and that people are losing their jobs and their homes. I also know that cancer does not care about this and that many more women have just been diagnosed with breast cancer during the time I am writing this letter.

Please donate whatever you can to my Dallas 60 mile walk. Those that can’t donate- please send good thoughts my way as I begin my walk November 4-6. The “no blister” thoughts and “no rain” thoughts are the best ;)

Here is a link to donate directly to my walk. I find it the fastest and easiet way to make a donation and I get an email to let me know that I am closer to my goal.

Pink Wings Team, Chicago 2010

Hi,

Team Pink Wings was the number 1 team in the country for the 60-mile Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk For The Cure in Chicago last week. We raised nearly $88,000! We had 33 walkers and 4 crew members. Our team was made up of men and women, veterans and virgins (walkers that is), sisters, mothers, daughters, co-workers and friends.

We plan to have another big team in Seattle for the 2011 3-Day walk. Come join us!

Hi,

Well, todays the day. I am leaving for Chicago for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure 60 mile walk. This will be my 11th 3 Day walk in the past 11 years. I am proud to say that my team Pink Wings has remained the #1 team in the entire country for fundraising and we just hit $80,000 last night with more money coming in. I can’t even believe what a great feeling this is- to know that I am helping to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

For those of you that have donated- THANKS!!!! I can’t continue to do this without you.

For those of you that have not yet donated- there is still time. However, today is the last day that the money will count towards what they announce onstage Friday night for the money our team has raised.

I am less than a couple hundred short of my goal of $2,300. I have been donating money I have raised at events to other team members and to my 16 year old daughter who is walking with me again this year and just met her goal last night!

At this point- if you can even donate just $5 or $10 it would get me that much closer to my goal. If you are unable to donate, please just do me a favor and keep team Pink Wings in your thoughts this weekend for a safe, great weather, no blister walk!!

Thanks again for helping me to make a difference!

Whats New : April 2007

posted by:

April 2007

Well Pink Wings will be celebrating 5 years on the internet this October, and we are up and running as strong as ever. We now ship to customers all over the world, including: all of the United States and Puerto Rico, Australia, England, Ireland, Scottland and Germany.

2007 has brought MANY new products. We have over 70 original custom Cloisonne Pink Ribbon pins.  These now include; animals, sports, our popular dated pink ribbon walk pins, annual bust pins, city/state pink ribbon walk pins, and OUR version of the pink ribbon. With so many new pins, people often ask us which is the most popular. And the answer is….the oh so popular Martini Pink Ribbon pin.  This pin continues to out sell every other pink ribbon pin we have, with the Paisley Pink Ribbon pin as a close runner up.

Pink Wings is turning some of our most popular designs into keychains, t-shirts, tattoos and hats. This year- we took our 4 original pink ribbon pins and put them together to make our new “Ribbons 4 A Cure” logo.  This logo now comes on onesies, youth t-shirts, adult t-shirts, and our Hoodie sweatshirt.  This Hoodie is selling so quickly, we are having a difficult time keeping it in stock!!

A book called “Foot Soldiers- Stories of the Breast Cancer 3-Day” came out last year and the Los Angeles chapter is my story. I now carry this book on my website. The auther, Dr. Deborah Douglas, is a breast cancer survivor who lives in Texas. Deborah walked in all of the 3-Day walks in 2004. Way to go Deborah!!

One of our Pink Wings customers is an amazing artist in Denver, Colorado.
I was excited when Evette contacted me to tell me that 2 of the pins we made for her are now in the gift shop at the Denver Museum! Way to go Evette!!! You can view her pins in the Pink Wings Store in the “Custom Pin” section. They are “Celebration” and “Embrace”. We just sent Evette her latest pin titled “Hope” for the Day of Caring event in Denver next month.

Pink Wings continues to participate in events almost monthly through out the year…and sometimes weekly.  We start our year with a Pink Wings booth at the fabulous Young Survivor Conference. Last year’s event was in Denver, Colorado.  This year was the 7th Annual conference and it was held in Arlington, Virginia.  It is such a great event to rekindle friendships, meet new people and learn about the latest info for young survivors. Dikla and her Los Angeles group were all there. Courtney- one of the youngest survivors I have met (20 years old) was at the conference again this year, and I met so many new young survivors. Hello to Christy and her mom…2 of the wilder women I met at the conference this year. Fellow young survivors (and my roommates for this event) Tiffany G. and Debra D. helped me out at the booth in Arlington.  Thanks ladies- I couldn’t have done it without your help!

From Arlington- I flew straight to Las Vegas for another conference, The National Consortium of Breast Centers. This was my first year at this event and I met a lot of new ladies from all over the country. This was another great conference for Pink Wings. Victoria Tashman- founder of Pink-Link.org introduced me to this event. Thanks Vicki!

In March, I drove back to Los Angeles with my family for our Spring Break.
By the end of the week- I needed a vacation from my vacation. First of all-it is almost a 20 hour drive and I am in a Yukon XL with my husband, 3 young daughters and my baby boy.

I started the week with a Boutique at The Ezralow Group in Calabasas to help their team raise money for the Revlon Run/ Walk.  We love the Ezralow ladies and enjoy getting together to do events with them. The Ezralow team looks great all decked out in pink ribbon jewelry and apparel supplied by Pink Wings. Thanks Judy, Cindi, Carmen and Georgia. Two of the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer 8 city walkers came out to see me. Thanks Martha and Renae for your support!

2 days later- we were in Compton at 6:30 AM for another event at the Southern California Gas Company. This was our 2nd boutique with the So.
Cal. Gas Company and we are well received there. We look forward to going back again next year. Thanks Ana and Angie for another successful event.

Later that day we headed to Universal for another event and then to Anaheim at 7AM the next morning for our last event.

On the days in between my events- I drove from one doctor appt. to the next. I have kept all of my doctors in L.A.  I did my mammogram, bone density test, oncology appt. and blood work. I am a 10 year survivor and I want to keep it that way- so I deligently go to my appts. every 6 months or every year!  Please make sure to make your yearly mammogram appointment!! Early detection saves lives!!

So now it is April and I leave for the ONS conference in Las Vegas next week. In May, I head out to Los Angeles again.  Then on to St. Louis, Missouri for the Essentially Women Focus On the Future conference and back to Los Angeles again for the Revlon Run/Walk for Women.

Sheryl Crow will be the host of the Revlon Walk this year. I have been wanting to meet Sheryl for years as it was her songs that got me through all of my surgeries related to breast cancer. Every time that I went in for a surgery I took my walkman in with me. Yes- this was in the days before the IPOD. The song that I listened to as I went under for every surgery was “All I Wanna Do” by Sheryl Crow.

May 18th and 19th, I will have a booth at the 2nd Annual FORCE conference in Tampa Bay, Florida. This is a great conference for anyone with the
BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation.  There is no other conference out there like this.

In July I will be walking my 2nd Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 40-mile walk in San Francisco. My first walk was in L.A. This year I have decided to join the Avon Mini Walks Team. This fantastic group of walkers is raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and education. Great job Renae!

In August, I will be walking in my 9th Breast Cancer 3-Day 60-mile Walk for Breast Cancer. I am walking in Chicago this year. Last year I walked in Michigan. I am hoping that my sister will join me. She helped me with a garage sale to raise money for my walk and we raised nearly $1,000 for breast cancer! Thanks Erin!!

If you would like to donate to one of my upcoming walks- please go to the Donate link on this website and it will take you to my donation pages for both the Avon Walk and the Breast Cancer 3-Day. Any amount is greatly appreciated!

On September 23rd, my family and I will be participating in the Portland “Race For the Cure” for the 2nd year in a row. Last year we had a team of
14 family members at this event. We had a blast!!  Pink Wings will also have a booth at the Health Expo in Portland on the days before the walk.

On September 29, Pink Wings will be in Tampa Bay, Florida at the FACTORS Breast Cancer Conference for the 2nd year in a row.

On October 6th, Pink Wings will be a part of “Walk for the Cause”. This is a 3.5-mile walk for breast cancer sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Albany (Oregon). As a member of the Soroptimist International of Albany I get to help with the planning of this event.
Last year, Jennifer Lyon was the grand marshal of the event. She was one of the contestants of the television show “Survivor: Palau”. Jennifer is a young breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed at the age of 33. I am excited to see who will be the Grand Marshal of the event this year.

On Oct 16th, I will be going to Pennsylvania for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Conference. This will be my 3rd year at this event.  I am so impressed by all that the PA Breast Cancer Coalition is doing for Breast Cancer. This conference is always a good one.

In November, I will be traveling to Arizona and San Diego for the 3-Day Walks. I love to cheer on the walkers, and I love to see them in Pink Wings gear! Over the years I have met so many of the walkers who come back and participate in the events year after year. There are many 3-Day addicts out there….and I am one of them. I can’t imagine life without the 3-Day and Avon Walks!

Well-that will be my year!

If you would like to learn more about any of these events, please go to the Links page or Upcoming Events page on my website. Most of these events have web sites that I am linked up to.

Pink Wings June 2006 News & Updates

posted by:

Hi,

These last 6 months have flown by!  Pink Wings had an exhibit booth at the FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered) conference in February in Florida, as well as the Young Survivor Conference in Denver. It was so great to meet so many new people at the first FORCE conference. This was a fantastic weekend to get informed about BRCA 1 and BRCA 2.  I am BRCA 2, and so is my younger sister. I was able to meet and talk to Dr. Susan Love at the dinner event.  I will definitely want to attend this conference again next year. Sue Friedman did a fantastic job putting on this event. To read more about FORCE- please visit their website (go to my LINKS page).

At the Young Survivor Conference, I was able to see so many other young survivors that I have met over the years. This was the first year that the conference was held in Denver. The last 2 conferences that I attended were in Philly.  It was just announced that next year’s conference will be held in Virginia. I was very sick at this conference and could barely talk, but thanks to my good friend Colleen and her sister Bethany- we were able to keep the Pink Wings booth manned. We had many new pins to show at this conference, as well as our new “What Is In Your Heart?”  necklaces (we sold out!).  I think my new friend, Elaine, bought one of everything in our booth!

In March, Pink Wings held a successful fundraising boutique for the Ezralow Foundation as they raised funds for the L.A. Revlon Run/ Walk for Women.  Pink Wings also helped to design a custom pin for the Ezralow team (as seen on the Custom Pins page of the Pink Wings store) and completed an order of almost 100 baseball caps with teal paisley ribbons.  The teal ribbon represents Ovarian Cancer.

In April, we had another busy month. Courtney flew to North Charleston, South Carolina to meet her sister, Melanie (from Gardenpaper.com) to set up a booth at the E.W. conference (Essentially Women).  This is a fantastic event for Pink Wings and Garden Paper. It is how we get our product out to the retail market.

In April, Courtney also got some sad news…the baby boy she was to adopt was born and the birth mom had changed her mind and decided to keep him.  Thank goodness for strong family and friends who reached out during this tough time with words and notes of hope.

Later in April, Courtney and her family participated in their 3rd Annual Pacific Palisades Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.  This is a fantastic event for the entire family as teams spend 24 hours walking the track raising money and awareness for cancer.  You can read the articles published about this event on the Press link on Pinkwings.com  For the 3rd year, Courtney was a team captain, as well as the Survivor Co-Chair for the event. This year, Pink Wings was proud to become a sponsor of the event.  How cool it was to see the Pink Wings Angel Logo on the back of all of the event t-shirts as a sponsor.  I am hoping Pink Wings will continue to grow so that we can sponsor more events.

In May, Courtney kept busy filling orders for custom pins and visors for teams participating in various walks for Cancer. Courtney also finally had a screening of her documentary “Courtney’s Amazing Race” at the Pacific Palisades Film Festival.  This documentary was made a few years ago as Courtney was getting ready to complete another Breast Cancer 3-Day event. The film follows Courtney and her family through a few weeks and deals with the effects that cancer has on an individual and a family.

In May- Courtney got some wonderful news!!!!!  On May 9th, she and her family were chosen to adopt a beautiful baby who had just been born earlier that day.  We named him Slayton Haven Zinszer. He was 8 lbs. 12 oz at time of birth and 20″ long.  He is the most perfect baby and a fantastic addition to the Zinszer family.  His big sisters; Sedona (12) , Sage (4) and Sienna (4) couldn’t be happier. Mommy and Daddy are beaming!! What a great gift for Mother’s Day!!

In the last  couple of months, Pink Wings has come out with more new pins.  You can view them on the website.  Our newest pin, set to arrive in just a few days, was inspired by a little girl named Madeline Ybarra. Maddie is 10-years-old.  2 years ago, she lost her mother to breast cancer. Maddie was a team captain this year for the Revlon Run/Walk and has raised almost $2,000 individually and almost $3,000 as a team of 41 members. Pink Wings is donating pins for Maddie’s team, as well as donating 100% of the proceeds from the first 27 pins sold so that Maddie can reach her goal of $2,000 for the Revlon event.  To purchase the pin- please go to www.pinkwings.com and go to our store.

Courtney will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in July in San Francisco.  She will also be walking in the Michigan Breast Cancer 3-Day event in August. If you would like to sponsor her in either of these events- please go to the Donate Link on the Pink Wings website.

More to come….Have a great summer!

Pink Wings Story

posted by:

Hi,
My story starts 9 years ago.  I was 33 years old and a single mother. My daughter Sedona was only 3 years old.  Her dad and I had separated when I was pregnant and the divorce was final shortly after Sedona was born.  I was going to school to get my Special Ed. Teaching credential, and had just taken a full time position as a Special Day class teacher at an elementary school in Pacific Palisades, California.
I felt healthy, was at an ideal weight and had hair down to my waist.  I was not a smoker and rarely drank. I ate a healthy diet…except for an occasional bowl of Lucky Charms when my sisters and I got together.  I worked out regularly at the gym. I enjoyed sports: water and snow skiing, horseback riding, jogging, biking, rollerblading, and hiking.
I had found a small lump in my right breast months earlier. I waited for a month, then went to the doctor.  He sent me for a mammogram in July.  The mammogram results were negative for cancer.  In September I went back to the doctors.  I told him that the lump seemed to be getting bigger. He sent me for an ultra-sound.  Again the results were negative, but he sent me to a surgeon for a consultation just to be on the safe side.  I went to the surgeon’s office determined to finish up with these appointments as I was so busy with school and my new teaching job.  I just didn’t have time for these doctor appointments.  What an annoyance they were becoming.  I also didn’t like having to spend $5 and $6 on parking and $10 on the co-payments my insurance required me to pay.  Little did I know that this was only the beginning of a long, long journey I was about to begin.
At the surgeon’s office I requested the biopsy that day.  For some reason, I felt that I just could not live with this lump in my breast.  The woman at the front desk said that she didn’t know if the surgeon would be able to perform a biopsy, as my appointment was just a consultation.  I insisted, and then was apprehensive to find out that the surgeon had a cancelled appointment and would be able to fit in a biopsy that afternoon.
Panic hit!!! “Do I really want to do this?’  I was all alone for my appointment. No one in my family knew anything about this.  I hadn’t mentioned the lump to anyone.  Breast Cancer did not run in my family, so what was the point?  It was nothing right? Negative for cancer…that is what the mammogram and ultrasound reports had said.
After making a call to my girlfriend’s husband (he is a breast surgeon), I decided to go ahead with the biopsy.  It was not painful, and I remember the surgeon showing the small lump to me, saying that it did not look malignant.  I drove myself home with some gauze over the biopsy area, still telling no one in my family what was going on.
The following week…it was a Tuesday actually, I got a call in my classroom.  It was the receptionist at the surgeon’s office.  She told me that I could not come into the doctor’s office for my follow-up appointment that afternoon by myself.  I thought this was absurd, as I had gone in for the biopsy surgery alone and had been allowed to drive myself home.
The woman on the other end of the phone said, “I have strict orders from the doctor.  You are not allowed to come in alone!”
I have seen enough movies to know what this means.  I didn’t need anyone
to tell me now.   I already knew what the doctor was going to say that
afternoon…I had the unthinkable…the “C” word!  I had cancer!!

That’s all I have written for now.
Thanks,
Courtney
