Walking 60 Miles again!

posted by:

I am sure many of you are pinked out by now- the color seems to be everywhere. I am hoping that the funds being raised this October and through the year are going to bring this dreadful disease to an end sooner rather than later. I lost 2 young friends to breast cancer this year and another young friend is currently fighting for her life. My 3-Day Walker Coach from one of my first walks back in the year 2000 is also fighting the disease. She is just 38, single and has no kids. She lost both of her breasts to breast cancer in April and is on chemo right now. She lost her mom to breast cancer 8 years ago. Enough is enough! I am angry about what this disease is doing to my friends- what this disease does to families.

As I have said in the past- I will walk every year until we find a cure. Little did I know that I would still be walking 12 years later- with no cure in site. In 2009, the Pink Wings team raised nearly $48,000 for the Boston 3 Day. In 2010, the Pink Wings team was the #1 team in the country for the Chicago walk, raising nearly $90,000!!! This year I am walking with a much smaller Pink Wings team in Dallas the first weekend of November. I have raised over $700 so far. I have $1,600 to go to reach the required minimum of $2,300.

With your help, I can meet this goal.

Just 2 weeks ago I celebrated 15 years as a cancer survivor. I am one of the lucky ones. I was here to help my daughter get off to college and to send my son to kindergarten. I am here to see my girls dance in their dance recitals and to watch my son play in his football games. Others are not so lucky and this is why I continue to walk. Every time I meet a young girl or boy who has lost their mom to breast cancer, I wonder why. Why did their mom die and I lived? Why are my children so lucky to have their mom here with them still, when others have had to watch their moms pass away? I will never know the answer- but I can feel good about keeping up the fight and continuing to walk and raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.

I know that times are very tough right now and that people are losing their jobs and their homes. I also know that cancer does not care about this and that many more women have just been diagnosed with breast cancer during the time I am writing this letter.

Please donate whatever you can to my Dallas 60 mile walk. Those that can’t donate- please send good thoughts my way as I begin my walk November 4-6. The “no blister” thoughts and “no rain” thoughts are the best 😉

Here is a link to donate directly to my walk. I find it the fastest and easiet way to make a donation and I get an email to let me know that I am closer to my goal.

Thanks again,

I walked in my 11th 3-Day 60 mile walk in Chicago August 6-8th, 2010. Team Pink Wings (there were 37 of us) raised nearly $90,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Thanks to all of you who donated. We were the number one team for fundraising in all the country for the Chicago Walk!
My sister and I were interviewed for the news here in Oregon about our committment in the fight against breast cancer and the 3 Day walks we participate in. To view the newsclip and other press about Courtney and Pink Wings, just go to this link:

Summer is over and the kids are all back in school. I have had a fantastic summer with my family traveling to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Mt. Shasta, Wisconsin, Chicago and Michigan. Some of the highlights:

Camping in our RV at Refugio State Park in Santa Barbara next to the family from the reality TV show “Little People Big World”. 2011:07:08:20110708-220131:CIMG2795.JPGSpending time with Pink Wings teammates in Chicago.2011:08:09:20110809-102148:CIMG3142.JPG

Cheering on walkers in Chicago and Michigan at the 3 Day for the Cure:

The Alpacas and the puppies were so cute! 2011:08:10:20110810-211353:CIMG3165.JPG2011:08:14:20110814-201958:IMG_0362.JPG. We ended our trip with a speedboat tour of Chicago on the last day of our vacation. What a blast!  I hope you all have had time to enjoy your summer with the special people in your life.

My last trip of the summer was taking my 18-year-old daughter to San Diego to move her into the dorms at the University of San Diego.  I can’t believe she is already in college. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and again in 1998- my daughter was just 3 and then 5 years old. I sometimes wondered if I would be alive to see her graduate from high school and begin college. I am so happy to be here to share this special time with her!

There was a fantastic article in the Oregonian Newspaper about me and my sister and the struggle we face with the knowledge of our breast cancer gene mutation. It was on the front page of the Sunday paper on the day of the Portland Race for the Cure! Here is the link to view the article:

I am gearing up for what will be our busy time as October and Breast Cancer Awareness month are just around the corner. Our Football pink ribbon pins will be arriving in just a week.

We are keeping busy, designing custom pins for teams, organizations and businesses. If you have a logo, an idea or a slogan that you would like to see on a pin- check out our custom pin pricing at  Click on the link on the left that says Custom Items.   We have the popular pink ribbon knee socks back in stock. These are fantastic for cheerleaders, dance teams, volleyball, basketball and soccer teams raising awareness for breast cancer in October. They are also great for walkers. The knee socks are $10 a pair or $5 a pair when purchased by the dozen. I will also be getting more of the pink ribbon sweat bands in for October. The football teams love these!  I have new pink ribbon ankle socks and crew socks, gloves and glove and hat sets with pink ribbons.  We are carrying many of the ribbon awareness pins in other colors now including teal, grey, white, gold, blue, purple, orange and green.

Our First Pink Wings Contest:

I have decided to have our first Pink Wings Pin Contest. If you have an idea for the Pink Wings 2012 Walk Pink Ribbon Pin, you can scan and email it to me at Feel free to look at the Collector’s Walk Pink Ribbons from other years on the website. The pin should have a pink ribbon, a saying and 2012 on it. You can submit as many ideas as you want. The winning 2012 Pink Ribbon Pin will be decided by year’s end. The winner will receive   100 free pink ribbon pins and will have their pin idea become the Pink Wings 2012 Collector’s Walk Pink Ribbon pin. Please note, artwork will become the property of Pink Wings as we will take the #1 idea and make it our 2012 pink ribbon pin.

On a sad note- my mom, Lucy, was just diagnosed with Colon Cancer in August.  She has had surgery and will start chemo next month. This is the disease that killed her mother many years ago.
